creates and destroys life. To create the black stuff the engineers need
to use organic matter as the ingredient. So that is why they were headed
back to earth: to create more black stuff out of humans killing them in
the process. So humans are basically like sheep grown-up for their
organic matter which is used in the process of creating the black stuff
and then life. The engineers use the Aliens to kill off all sheep before
their bodies are collected and used to produce more black stuff. And
this process is repeated throughout the universe spreading organic
life.
That is also why the engineers hate David being non-organic, and is also why their equipment is non-techy , basic looking. They are pro life not pro technology.
